The Complete MOD Compo!
Hosted by Vince "Novus" Young

CMC is a monthly music competition for trackers. Here's the concept: every month, I listen to all the tracker songs that have been entered into CMC, pick out the top 6, and put 'em up for you to vote on. This ensures that you always have quality songs to listen to and vote on, but still gives you the chance to make your voice heard!

Thanks for making CMC the longest-running compo on the web today! Your downloads, votes and song entries are greatly appreciated.

I'd apologize for the delay... except it wasn't my fault. So there. ;) Blame my web host instead. I could have had everything updated sometime on Sunday, except that the FTP server refused to let me log in to upload the updated files. But it's all good now.

Da winnin' feelin'! It didn't set the record for closest finish, but June's compo sure came close, with Josss's funk opus "Da Feelin'" winning by just 0.8% of the total points. The top 4 songs all had a chance to win towards the end, and the gap between 1st and 4th place was only 1.8% of the total points. Congrats to Josss, Prophecy, Impulse, and Ivory for a hard-fought competition! Watching the frequent lead-changes in the final week of voting was a lot of fun for me. :) Click here for June's complete results!

Return of a legend! 3 months ago, it was Nightbeat. And now, it's Andreas Viklund who is marking his return to the tracking scene with a new song, in this case a co-op with Perzzon. Can Andreas follow in Nightbeat's footsteps? It won't be easy... Pro-Xex does a little better every month, and his last song finished in 2nd Place. Impulse also returns after a strong showing in June, and Kricke, Sebuko and Turkanen all have solid debut entries of their own. Click here to download and vote on June's songs!

News: Monday, June 23rd

Newskool spinoffs postponed... The newskool CMC spinoffs that I was planning to unveil in July will have to be postponed indefinitely. I work the overnight shift at a hotel, and for the past few weeks we've been understaffed, which means I've had to work 7 nights a week. Combine that with my other part-time job, and that's added up to very little free time for me. And as of right now, we still haven't been able to hire anyone new. (Most people don't like working from 11:00pm to 7:00am, you see...) I'm still trying to figure out how I'll find the time to screen the entries for just 1 compo, let alone for 4, and if I can't do this right, I shouldn't do it at all. Don't worry, the newskool spinoff compos will start eventually, just not right now. I'll let you know when. And in the meantime, don't forget to click here to download and vote on June's songs!

News: Sunday, May 4th

CMC goes newskool! Those of you who subscribe to the CMC Mailing List got this news first several days ago, and now I'm sharing it with everyone else! Starting in July, I'll be starting three spin-offs from The Complete MOD Compo: CMC Renoise, CMC Skale, and CMC Mad. As the names suggest, each of these spin-off compos will be identical to the current CMC, except that they will be specifically for songs written using the next-generation trackers Renoise, Skale and Mad Tracker.

The issue of how to include the next-gen formats in CMC has been on my mind for months now, but I've been relunctant to let them in because of the lack of support for the next-gen formats in the all-in-one track-players such as MODPlug Player and XMPlay. Mixing oldskool and next-gen formats in the same compo would force the voters to download multiple programs and switch between them just to hear all the entries, and I feared such an inconvenience would drive away voters.

By running separate compos, I'm giving trackers who use the next-gen formats the chance to compete on CMC's stage without inconveniencing CMC's existing core of loyal voters. The voters will have the freedom to vote in just one compo if they choose to, or in two, three, or even all four compos. You'll only be required to vote in one compo to enter a song, and they don't even have to be the same compo! You could cast votes in CMC Oldskool and CMC Renoise and then enter a song for CMC Skale, for example.

I'm waiting until July to debut the newskool versions of CMC because I want to make sure I take the time to do this right. I'll be trying out all three programs for the first time this week so that I can figure out what restrictions, if any, will be needed on the use of features such as VST instruments and others that blur the line between tracking and sequencing. I also need to announce this news on the developement websites for all three programs, get feedback from the trackers who already regularly use these programs, and plan a new layout for the website.

So, what do you folks think? Feedback of any sort is both welcomed and appreciated at vince_young@hotmail.com.
